Ever since my oldest was about 2 and saw the first Tinkerbell movie, fairies have been part of our life! Honestly, I love the adorable fairy garden trend, and even my husband can appreciate the creativity of these little gardens. This year we made our own Fairy Houses to use in a fairy garden or just as a home for toy fairies. Best of all, they are made by reusing 2 liter pop bottles!
Each Fairy House uses one 2 liter bottle. First you need to cut your bottle. To start, you cut the top off where it is at its widest to form the roof of your fairy house. Next, I cut 2 parallel lines straight down about 2 inches apart and across the bottom of them to form the opening of the door. Then I cut around the top to shorten the house to the size I wanted once it was assembled.
Before you can decorate your house you need to hot glue the top to the bottom. With ours, I made sure to overlap the top even if it meant bending the edge of the bottom section a little. The neatness (or messiness in my case) of your hot glue won’t matter once it is decorated! I did find during this step that bottles from Coke products work especially well because the top is naturally larger then the middle section; they also make a nicer shaped house. Unfortunately for us we only had one such bottle since we are generally Pepsi drinkers.
Now protect your surfaces and clothing and grab your acrylic paints! Even the bottoms of our houses got painted; luckily they can be balanced on their tops to dry! Of course if you want additional painted details like stripes or spots you will have to have multiple coats allowing the paint to dry between each one, and of course let them dry completely before moving to the next step!
Now for the really fun part, decorating! This was pretty much a free for all in our house. I got out sequins, feathers, pom poms, ribbon, and so on for the kids to choose from. For the most part they just copied each other in what they used, but they were all quite pleased with their choices! I allowed them to glue on the sequins and things with tacky glue while I used hot glue for the ribbons.
The kids couldn’t wait to use their little houses with some of their toy fairies! In fact, I am not sure these will make it into a fairy garden; we may have to make even more Fairy Houses!
